The 2025 46th World Armwrestling & 27th Para-Armwrestling Championships took place in Albena, Bulgaria.

The event was held over 12 days, from September 10th - 22nd 2025, and brought together over 1,700 competitors, officials, and supporters from more than 60 countries.

The event took place at the scenic resort town of Albena, Bulgaria, at the Albena Resort situated on the northern coast of the Black Sea in Bulgaria, and was hosted by the Bulgarian Armwrestling Federation (BFCR) under the leadership of BFCR President Georgi Blagov.

The 2025 championships seamlessly integrated both able-bodied and para-armwrestling divisions, highlighting the sport's incredible inclusivity. From Junior and Youth competitors to Masters and Para-athletes, the tables in Albena witnessed intense determination. Every category brought raw emotion, tactical setups, and lightning-fast pins that kept the global audience on the edge of their seats.

Bulgaria proved to be an exceptional host. The tournament featured world-class staging, professional refereeing, and a high-definition live broadcast that streamed the high-stakes Senior finals to millions of fans worldwide. The atmosphere inside the venue was electric, backed by roaring team delegations cheering on every slip, strap match, and victory.

The primary African nations that secured athlete representation at the 2025 World Championships include Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa, Mali and Cameroon. The vast majority of these athletes secured their slots at the 14th African Armwrestling Championship which were held in Abuja, Nigeria, and served as the official continental qualifier.

Navigating intense travel logistics and fierce competition, these athletes solidified Africa's status as a rising superpower in the global armwrestling landscape.

Record Numbers, Record Atmosphere !

The European Armwrestling Federation (EAF) proudly welcomed more than 1,300 athletes from 34 countries to the 35th European Armwrestling Championships and 28th European Para-Armwrestling Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.

Hosted by the Hungarian Armwrestling Federation under the leadership of President Attila Csabai and GS Tamas Rausch, at MTK Sportpark, this edition marked the biggest European Championships in EAF history.

Thank you to all the para-athletes, coaches, referees, organisers and supporters who contributed to an unforgettable event filled with passion, strength and fair play.

Participating Countries were : Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia (as neural), Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye and Ukraine.

Ghana hosted the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championships, widely dubbed as “Accra 2026," from 29th April to 3rd May, 2026. The highly anticipated continental tournament was held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.

The event brought together the best pullers from 22 countries across the continent to compete for continental titles, medals, and crucial qualification rankings.

Notable participants and powerhouses like Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, and the host nation Ghana were featured in the fiercely contested matches, which were also crucial qualifiers for the World Championships to be held in India in October, and for the All-Africa Games to be held in Egypt in January 2027.

AFA (The Armwrestling Federation of Africa), and the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) organised the championship under the leadership of President Charles Osei Asibey and GS Julien Boumsong.

Held under the theme “Pulling Africa Together” the championships brought together over 450 athletes and officials from 22 African countries, making it one of the biggest and most successful editions of the continental competition.

Participating nations included Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, South Africa, Egypt, Cameroon, Kenya, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Chad, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mauritius, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and DR Congo.

From the opening ceremony to the final bout, the championship lived up to expectations with thrilling contests, electrifying atmosphere and remarkable displays of skill and endurance from participating athletes.

Host nation Ghana, competing as the Golden Arms, thrilled home fans with outstanding performances against some of Africa’s strongest armwrestling nations including Nigeria, Benin, South Africa and Egypt.

The event also highlighted the rapid growth of armwrestling across Africa as countries demonstrated improved techniques, discipline and professionalism throughout the competition.

President of the Africa Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, praised the participating nations for exhibiting high standards and unity. According to him, the championship was not only about medals but also about strengthening friendship, fostering continental integration and promoting African excellence through sports.

“Africa has truly shown class in Accra. The level of competition, discipline and unity displayed by all participating countries has been exceptional. This championship has once again proven that African armwrestling continues to grow from strength to strength,” he stated.

He further explained the federation’s vision of “Pulling Africa Together,” describing it as a movement that uses armwrestling as a tool to unite the continent beyond borders, language and culture.

“Pulling Africa Together" means bringing the youth and people of Africa onto one platform through sports. Armwrestling is creating friendships, promoting peace, encouraging cultural exchange and giving young athletes opportunities to dream big and succeed. Through this sport, we are building stronger bonds among African nations and projecting a united Africa to the world” he added.

The Golden Arms of Ghana emerged overall champions after an impressive medal haul of 168 medals made up of 71 gold, 63 silver and 34 bronze medals. Benin placed second with 79 medals while South Africa finished third. Nigeria also put up a strong performance to finish among the top nations.

The championship also served as a platform to promote tourism and Ghanaian culture, with visiting teams enjoying cultural displays, local cuisine and tours of some of Accra’s popular attractions.

Fans who thronged the venue over the competition period were treated to exciting battles, dramatic comebacks and unforgettable moments as athletes battled fiercely for continental glory.

Several dignitaries, sports administrators and corporate representatives who attended the championship commended the Local Organising Committee for delivering a world-class event.

The successful hosting of the competition has further cemented Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s preferred destinations for major international sporting events.

As curtains fell on the championship, participating countries departed Accra with memorable experiences, new friendships and renewed determination to continue developing the sport across the continent.

KAF views the use of performance enhancement drugs, prohibited substances and prohibited methods to artificially enhance performance as unethical and contrary to the concept of fair play. It undermines the values sport and can endanger the health of the athletes and therefore strictly forbids it.

WAF and AFA (and therefore KAF) officially recognise WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) as the International authority in anti-doping matters. WAF is an official signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC).

KAF will work directly with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), the national regulatory agency for anti-doping in Kenya, to ensure our competitions and the athletes comply with the Anti-Doping Act, 2020 (and its latest updates) as well as the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC).

Athletes, Athlete Support Personnel, and other Persons may be subject to drug testing. Anyone who tests positive or violates any anti-doping rule will face the appropriate disciplinary consequences.

Our goal is to protect athletes’ fundamental right to participate in doping-free sport, thereby promoting health, fairness, and equality for all athletes in Kenya.
