BBC News Africa - The women powering up African armwrestling

It is a battle of power and recognition. A growing number of women across Africa are aiming to change the perception that arm wrestling is a male sport - and are enjoying the benefits and opportunities that come with it.

BBC Sport Africa went to speak to some of those leading the charge at the 2025 Africa Armwrestling Championship in Abuja, Nigeria.

Over 400 athletes and officials from 20 African nations attended. The event also hosted the 7th Para-Armwrestling Championship for disabled athletes.
Across Africa, more women are gripping the table and rewriting what strength and power look like.

At the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship in July 2025 in Abuja, female participation jumped by 47%. Athletes like South Africa’s Rosemary Botha, Ghana’s Grace Mintah, and Nigeria’s Winifred Ndidi and referee Sandra Ndukwu are showing that arm wrestling is about confidence, courage, and claiming space.

From street corners to global arenas, these women are not just fighting for medals. They are challenging old ideas about femininity, power, and visibility.
